Want to lose weight but don’t have the time to cook?
Modern life can be very hectic, you may lead a busy lifestyle and getting around to preparing healthy weight loss meals may just not be an option for you. So how can you maintain a healthy low calorie diet?
If you don’t have time to cook then the easiest option is to buy ready meals, I have in the past been of the opinion that ready meals were tasteless and full of calories, salt and fat, and generally weren’t good for you, but it seems that things have changed. Supermarkets now produce some very tasty and nutritious meals at reasonable prices, taking just a few minutes to heat up in your microwave or conventional oven.
Seems too good to be true doesn’t it?
There are a few things to consider when choosing your ready meal:
1. Make sure that you choose from the healthy eating range rather than from the standard supermarket meals. Be sure to check the calorie and fat content, don’t assume that because it is branded a healthy option it is! When buying check that the fat content is less than 10g and 350 calories per portion.
2. Compare the nutritional content per portion to the recommended guideline amounts printed on the packet. Too much salt is bad for you, so make sure you check the salt content as it’s easy to go over these amounts and defeat the objective of healthy eating.
3. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the words reduced mean low calorie or low fat. Some reduced fat products like mayo, salad cream and dressings may still have a high fat content. By law reduced simply means 30% fewer calories than the standard product, remember to take these calories into account as it may not help your weight loss.
4. Don’t fall into the trap of eating too big a portion. You may be in the habit of eating large portion sizes. These ready meals can help you to relearn what a suitable portion size should be. If the portion doesn’t look very filling simply bulk it out with vegetables, a side salad, or serve on a smaller plate.
Ready meals are a convenient way to eat when time is short, but there is no substitute for good simple healthy cooking using fresh ingredients. You should make time whenever possible to prepare your own food, it tastes better and is better for you, losing none of the vital nutrients and vitamins.
If you choose wisely you can eat well on ready meals, the devil is in the details.
