BBC News – ‘Tell loved ones they are overweight this Christmas’
Lose weight for xmas?
Do you know someone who needs to lose weight? Christmas is a time when many over indulge, and experts recommend this as the perfect time to tell loved ones they are overweight and could be severely increasing the risk of damaging their health. A recent poll by The National Obesity Forum said that it was important to be forthcoming about these issues because of the possible health issues.
Lose the weight for better health
It is a well known fact that being overweight, especially around the waist, increases the risks of getting diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Smoking, stress, depression, anxiety and high blood pressure are also major linked health concerns too at this time of year.
Lose weight around the stomach
Lately health experts have been more concerned about abdominal fat, which is fat around the stomach area, they recommend that men have a stomach measurement of no more than 94cm or 37 inches, and women 80 cm or 31 and a half inches. The fat contained around the abdominal area is closely related to the release of hormones and proteins which control how the body breaks down and uses sugars and fats.
Who needs to lose weight?
The poll of in excess of 2,000 people found that over 42% of those aged 18 to 24 would not feel able to tell a loved one they should lose weight, because they would be afraid of hurting the others feelings. Of those aged 25 to 44 it was just over 33% and those aged older it was about 25%.
Understandably it was hardest for men to tell their partners that there was a weight loss issue, although women were more concerned about telling a friend about their excessive weight . Experts believe that with friends and families gathering over the festive period there is an opportunity that is too good to be missed. So don’t shy away from the issue of loosing weight, it may save a life.
Experts suggest they should lose weight
Said Prof David Haslam, chair of the National Obesity Forum, “Suggesting to someone that they should consider losing a few pounds may not be a comfortable conversation to have.
“But if someone close to you has a large waistline then as long as you do it sensitively, discussing it with them now could help them avoid critical health risks later down the line and could even save their life.”
Dr Jean Pierre Despres, scientific director of the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk, agreed.
“Start by encouraging someone close to you to make simple lifestyle changes such as becoming more active, making small alterations to their eating habits and replacing sugary drinks for water.”
