Lose weight and still eat out
Are you trying to lose weight? Do you eat out whilst shopping?
Did you know that a cup of coffee or a burger could use up almost half your daily calorie allowance? If you were to add a muffin and a milkshake, you could possibly have consumed your full quota.
A recent report by the BBC has highlighted the enormous amount of calories in some of the convenient food “to go” . Many high streets in the UK now have fast food outlets or coffee shops and it is a case of dieter beware when you enter these places.
Lose weight says the Government
The government is urging us to consider carefully what we eat, in an attempt to stem the ever rising obesity rates and
to lose weight. It is now in the process of asking fast food chains and restaurant chains to put nutritional and calorie information on their menus. Whether this information will contain Slimming World or Weight Watchers points is not yet clear so some people on a calorie controlled diet will be ok, others loosing weight by other methods may have to look for a little more information.
One major fast food outlet who is already on board is McDonald’s, this week they are starting to display the calories for all the items of food and drink on their menus, in all of their 1,200 restaurants. Starbucks is also following suit too.
Consumers don’t realise just how many calories they are consuming, because without clear labeling, it’s easy to see how you might easily consume a whole days calorie allowance in one visit.
The liquids, coffee, soft drinks etc are the ones that usually go uncounted, they are often high in calories and easily consumed.
The daily calorie allowance for a man is no more than 2,500, and for a woman no more than 2,000.
A dieters dream, Starbucks Americano coffee has only 17 calories, however, go for grande Hot Chocolate, with whipped cream and you have just consumed 556 calories! If you add a chocolate shortbread then you’ll add another 344 calories! A Weight Watchers nightmare!
Lose weight in Starbucks too
The best choice from Starbucks is the fruit salad at only 95 calories.
McDonald’s – buy a large cappuccino and chicken and bacon salad for a measly 285 calories, but add a Big Mac and large fries with a shake and you have passed the 1,450 mark in your daily calorie allowance.
So it is easy to see how things can get out of hand, just by eating an extra 500 calories a day, you would gain about a pound in weight. Continue to eat like this for months on end and its easy to see how you could become overweight or eventually obese.
Of course calories are important, however you really need to look at how much salt, fat and sugar is being consumed too. One gram of carbohydrate is about 4 calories and a gram of fat is almost 9 calories.
So 100g of chips is about 190 calories, and that is almost twice as much a the same weight of boiled potatoes.
It is still possible to diet and enjoy eating fast foods, and maintain a healthy body, simply be aware of what you are eating and the calories consumed, maybe having a lighter meal later to compensate for it.
It’s easier to lose weight now
Weight loss is now easier to maintain thanks to having the food content information displayed, and this can only be a good thing, it will give us all the information we need to make a careful and considered choice when eating out, allowing us to make informed decisions and choose the best option available.
