Lose Weight to Reduce Health Risks
A recent study carried out in the US has highlighted the sad fact that many obese and overweight people that have been seen in Emergency Departments don’t realise that they need to lose weight as their weight poses a significant risk to their health, many of the patients surveyed have said that doctors have never told them that losing weight is needed urgently.
450 patients were selected randomly and asked the following two questions:
Do you believe your present weight is damaging to your health? Has your doctor or other health professional ever told you that you are overweight?
How many need to lose weight?
Only 19 percent of those who were overweight had ever discussed their weight control issues with a healthcare provider, and only 30 percent of those told that their weight was unhealthy, agreed with that opinion.
More women agree they need to lose weight
Only around 47 percent of overweight and obese men agreed that their excessive weight was a problem, the remainder didn’t. Women on the other hand were more likely to agree that being obese or overweight was a problem, 62 percent according to the study.
70 percent said they need to lose weight
70 percent of obese people with a BMI of over 30 said that their weight was affecting their wellbeing and health, which means that 3 out of ten obese people don’t have any concerns about their health, which they clearly should have. The morbidly obese, 39 percent of them, only thought of themselves as overweight, not obese.
What are the health risks for those that do not lose weight?
Health risks linked to obesity highlighted by the survey in Emergency Departments include – hypertension, diabetes, cancers, osteoarthritus, gallbladder disease, heart disease, stokes and many other metabolic issues.
A doctors view – start to lose weight now!
Keri Gans a registered dietician said ” That’s disconcerting, people need their physician to tell them straight out that if they don’t lose weight they are putting themselves at an increased risk of disease. If they are not being told by the doctors, they might think. Oh, there is nothing to worry about” He continued, ” Unfortunately nothing happens until a patient becomes concerned, I’ll ask them do you need to wait until you have diabetes until you start to lose weight? Do you need to suffer a heart attack? And some people will actually say Yes!
